چکیده

Quantitative dynamical models of galaxies require deprojecting the observed surface brightness to determine the luminosity density of the galaxy. Existing deprojection methods for axisymmetric galaxies assume that a unique deprojection exists for any given inclination, even though the projected density is known to be degenerate to the addition of “konus densities” that are invisible in projection. We develop a deprojection method based on linear regularization that can explore the range of luminosity densities statistically consistent with an observed surface brightness distribution. The luminosity density is poorly constrained at modest inclinations (i >∼ 30), even in the limit of vanishing observational errors. In constant mass-to-light ratio, axisymmetric, two-integral dynamical models, the uncertainties in the luminosity density result in large uncertainties in the meridional plane velocities. However, the projected line-of-sight velocities show variations comparable to current typical observational uncertainties. On the uncertainties of the central density in axisymmetric galaxies due to deprojection

The deprojection of the surface brightness of axisymmetric galaxies is indeterminate unless the galaxy is seen edge-on. In practice, this problem is often circumvented by making ad hoc assumptions about the density distribution. However, one can redistribute the density and still project to the same surface brightness. This is similar to adding so-called konus densities to the assumed density d...

Intrinsic Shapes of Elliptical Galaxies

Tests for the intrinsic shape of the luminosity distribution in elliptical galaxies are discussed, with an emphasis on the uncertainties. Recent determinations of the ellipticity frequency function imply a paucity of nearly spherical galaxies, and may be inconsistent with the oblate hypothesis. Statistical tests based on the correlation of surface brightness, isophotal twisting, and minor axis ...

The Fundamental Plane and merger scenario I. Star formation history of galaxy mergers and origin of the Fundamental Plane

We perform numerical simulations of galaxy mergers between star-forming and gas-rich spirals in order to explore the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We consider particularly that the origin of the slope of the FP is essentially due to the non-homology in structure and kinematics of elliptical galaxies and accordingly investigate structural and kinematical properties...

A dearth of dark matter in ordinary elliptical galaxies.

The kinematics of the outer parts of three intermediate-luminosity elliptical galaxies were studied with the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph. The galaxies' velocity-dispersion profiles were found to decline with the radius, and dynamical modeling of the data indicates the presence of little if any dark matter in these galaxies' halos. This unexpected result conflicts with findings in other galaxy...

The black hole mass–bulge mass correlation: bulges versus pseudo-bulges

We investigate the scaling relations between the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) mass (Mbh) and the host bulge mass in elliptical galaxies, classical bulges, and pseudo-bulges. We use two-dimensional image analysis software BUDDA to obtain the structural parameters of 57 galaxies with dynamical Mbh measurement, and determine the bulge K-band luminosities (Lbul,K), stellar masses (Ms), and dyna...
